But after that Debutant Prithvi Shaw (134 off 154) and Cheteshwar Pujara (86 off 130) laid the foundation for a big score with a 206-run partnership.
Captain Virat Kohli (72 off 137) and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane (41 off 92) then took the innings ahead with a 105-run partnership in the final session, putting India in the driver’s seat before caught behind off.
Run machine Virat Kohli looked set for another sizzling hundred and was batting with Rishabh Pant (17 off 21) to keep the scoreboard ticking as India scored 364/4 at stumps on Day 1.
It was India’s highest score against West Indies in a day’s play. There previous best was 361/4 at Gros Islet, 2006 (Day 1).
