Likewise, an orderly bowler can be played at a crucial moment as needed. With the replacement player, the team can change the picture of the match.

A few months back, a senior executive of the IPL Steering Council planned to team up with the traditional XI. It mentions ‘power player’. Accordingly, this player can go to the field for batting or bowling when he is not in the final 11.

The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly will take the decision on whether to give a chance to an alternate player at a governing council meeting in Mumbai on Wednesday. “A final decision will be taken by the BCCI president,” said a senior BCCI official.

Ganguly will hold discussions with the chairman and other office bearers of the IPL governing council, but many things have to be considered. Ganguly was not available to comment. Sources said, ‘There are many doubts as to the matter, as this will change the basic structure of cricket.’

The source further said, ‘No decision has been made yet. We have no idea that such a change will take place in the Mushtaq Ali tournament with four days remaining.

One group of IPL governing councils is keen to see the impact of this change in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which starts on November 7. According to one group, it will benefit the IPL franchise of older players.
